The history of Channel Cruises International B.V.
After world war II many river and canal-ships used for transport of freight were made
redundant due to economic growhth in vessel-capacity. Nowhere in europe one could
find such a large fleet of small freighters as in Holland.
An important part of this fleet has been scrapped due to lack of employment, however
in the 70thees a group of enterprising people discovered the historic value of this vleet
and started te refurbish freighters and rebuilt these into passengers-vessels. Some
moved by sail, others by engine. Already in the 50thees one could see freighters,
temporary furnished with wooden frames and beds, sailing on the rivers Rhine and
Moselle. In wintertime these ships were used again for freight.
Throughout the years this fleet of hundreds of vessels has been professionalized and
now it is possible to enjoy in a comfortable accomodation the voyage through the
Dutch landscape and cities. If you really want to see how Holland looks like, then
cruising is a must.
